“Dear IGU Colleagues

The outbreaks of novel coronaviruses (COVID-19) have become increasingly severe worldwide. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. On March 18, 2020, cases of COVID-19 have now been recorded in about 160 countries/territories/areas, spread across six continents, and the number of confirmed cases outside of China has exceeded 110,000, clearly higher than the confirmed cases in China (81116). Meanwhile, the number of newly confirmed cases in China has dropped to double digits. On March 12, China’s National Health Commission announced that the peak of the epidemic in China had passed. On March 18, there were 34 newly confirmed cases in China, and all the cases were attributed to travelers returning from abroad. No newly confirmed cases in Wuhan, China on March 19!

There is much to be learned from China’s experience in the global fight against the pandemic. To this end, a team of geographers that include International Geographical Union (IGU) Vice-President Bojie Fu, former Secretary-General Mike Meadows, and Chair of the IGU Commission on Geography for Future Earth Wenwu Zhao, have published a systematic summary of China’s experience in combatting the epidemic.  China’s approach integrates elements of coordination, classification, and collaboration (see Figure 1).  The co-authors call for full cooperation within and between all countries as joint actions are required to contain COVID-19 globally.
