Geografia, cartografia e guerre: un trinomio scontato?
A partire dal noto libro di Yves Lacoste (La géographie, ça sert, d’abord, a faire la guerre, 1976) fino alla mostra curata da Massimo Rossi, aperta a Treviso dal novembre 2016 al febbraio 2017 (La Geografia serve a fare la guerra?) i geografi, e non solo, si sono interrogati sul rapporto fra geografia e operazioni militari: in alcuni casi si è quasi voluto mettere sul banco degli accusati la disciplina, e in particolare la cartografia, che della geografia costituisce uno degli strumenti – anche se non l’unico – per aver fornito, in tutte le epoche, un supporto fondamentale di informazioni alle azioni di guerra. Massimo Rossi, nel titolo della mostra che ha curato, propone in forma dubitativa l’affermazione di Yves Lacoste. In effetti, nonostante ci sia molto di vero nel riconoscimento di un rapporto stretto fra geografia, cartografia e azioni militari, nella trattatistica sulle fortificazioni e all’interno di rappresentazioni cartografiche del passato e del presente si rilevano talvolta accenni che sottintendono una speranza per un mondo più votato alla conciliazione o almeno alla fine di ostilità in atto. Si cercherà pertanto di approfondire questo aspetto della cosiddetta cartografia militare, esaminando almeno un caso significativo.
Abstract: Geography, Cartography and Wars: A Predictable Trinomial?
Starting from the well-known book by Yves Lacoste (La geographie, ça sert, d’abord, a faire la guerre, 1976) to the exhibition coordinated by Massimo Rossi (La Geografia serve a fare la guerra?) in Treviso, Benetton Foundation, November 2016 – February 2017, geographers and other scholars discussed about the connection between geography and war: sometimes geography and primarily cartography, that is one of its instruments – even if not unique – have been accused of having always provided an essential support of information to military operations. Massimo Rossi introduces, in a doubtful form, the statement of Yves Lacoste. Actually, although a tight correlation between geography, cartography and wars is recognized, it is sometimes possible to observe, in the treatises about fortresses and defensive walls and in many maps of the past and of the present times, some disapproval of damages produced by the wars and the chance of a world of peace. This uncommon perspective of the so called military cartography will be examined in this paper.
Résumé: Géographie, cartographie et guerres : un trinome prévisible?
À partir du célèbre livre d’Yves Lacoste (La géographie, ça sert, d’abord, à faire la guerre, 1976) jusqu’à l’exposition organisée par Massimo Rossi (Trévise, novembre 2016 – février 2017 : La Geografia serve a fare la guerra?), les géographes et d’autres se sont interrogés sur le lien qui existe entre la géographie et les opérations militaires : dans certains cas la discipline, et en particulier la Cartographie, a été accusé d’avoir toujours fourni un support fondamental d’information aux actions de guerre. Massimo Rossi, dans le titre de l’exposition qu’il a organisée, propose la déclaration de Yves Lacoste sous une forme douteuse. En fait, bien que une relation étroite entre la géographie, la cartographie et les actions militaires soit reconnue, les traités sur les fortifications et les représentations cartographiques du passé et du présent nous permettent parfois de trouver des allusions plus dévoués à la conciliation ou au moins à la fin de l’hostilité persistante. Nous allons donc essayer d’approfondir cet aspect de la cartographie militaire, en examinant au moins un cas important.
